TLA has more than 20 years experience in the development and delivery of personal development advice and programs. We don't simply roll out programs in the way they've always been taught. TLA does not work from a provocation model, we don't believe catharsis (that is, having a highly emotional experience) is good or relevant just for the sake of it. Individuals on our courses need to be able to make meaning of their experiences, and while each of our programs are conducted in groups, the wellbeing of each individual in the group is always paramount.
Our personal and professional development programs are adult education programs, and are not intended to be therapeutic.
Regardless of this, every one of TLA's programs are taught by a psychotherapist who is a member of the Australian Association of Somatic Psychotherapists (www.somaticpsych.org.au), and in the vast majority of programs, participants are supported by at least one other, and often more, psychotherapists or counsellors.
Are personal development courses right for you?
TLA takes its responsibilities to each and every participant very seriously. We are very clear in stating and explaining to our participants that our programs are not intended to be therapeutic - but we do understand that the very nature of this work involves consideration of issues and experiences over the length of a person's life.
TLA also understands that for a significant number of people who are drawn to courses of this kind, there have been negative or difficult experiences in their lives that they are trying to take into account.
On this basis, we believe it is not sufficient to simply say 'this work is adult education' and leave our responsibilities there. We say, this work is adult education but we will do whatever we can to support and guide participants to considering other ways of dealing with the issues they are facing wherever necessary.
This includes recommending that an individual not proceed with a TLA program if we do not believe they are in a position to be able to gain value from it and/or if they did participate would in some way not be in their best interest.
TLA has recommended on occasions that people not continue, have refunded their money, and offered information and assistance in accessing alternative support (including medical and other referrals) to assist them with their particular difficulties.
We will continue to do this wherever we consider it to be necessary to the very best of our ability.
Professional development
TLA has created an effective bridge between personal development and professional development - very few, if any, personal development organisations also offer professional development or corporate training.
The pragmatic, theory and relational based work conducted by TLA lends itself well to both the general public, and the business arena.
TLA has worked successfully with a wide range of organisations across a variety of sectors including banking, retail, government, travel, insurance, telecommunications, education, professional services, financial services and more. We are recognised by our associates in corporate human potential as the organisation at the leading edge.
Clients
TLA is well known in Victoria and has worked with many well known corporations, and receives referrals from a large range of professionals including general practitioners, psychologists, psychotherapists, natural health practitioners, organisational management, teachers, lawyers, and more.
Cost of our programs
TLA has a commitment to value- we don't overprice any of our programs. It is the same price to attend one of our programs if you are attending on your own, part of group, or your employer is paying.
TLA is an ethics based organisation
TLA values and promotes integrity. Our first consideration is always to what our personal responsibility is in any situation. We value each person with whom we interact and want to do the very best that we can. We attempt to do whatever we can to ensure that any individual who wants to participate in one of our programs, or use our services can do so – but we must make sure it’s within the bounds of ensuring that it is the right thing for them.
We do not believe in gurus
TLA does not believe in “guru-dom”, nor do any of our teachers believe they are gurus. Our teachers do not believe that they have the right to assume that they know you better than you know you. Our teachers do not consider it their job to tell you who you are, what you should do, who you should be, where you should go.
Our job is to develop a relationship with you where you feel sufficiently understood and appropriately responded to.
It is our belief that when you feel sufficiently understood, you will come to know who you are, what you want to do, who you want to be, and where you want to go – TLA just helps you to reach those decisions.
You stay in control of everything
We always promote participation by choice. TLA won't make you do anything that you don't want to do. We don't require you to have difficult conversations about what may have happened to you during your life. We promote each individual's self agency - the ability to make decisions in your own best interests and to act as you choose, rather than simply because someone else thinks it's a good idea.
TLA will not make you sign up for other courses or sell its courses
TLA doesn't require you to on-sell it's programs to your friends and family.
